The admired fashion label that is Kenneth Cole was actually born of a film called “The Birth of a Shoe Company.” Well, sort of. Twenty years ago when the young designer wanted to quickly sell his shoes out of a truck in Midtown Manhattan he ran into a little problem.

Kenneth Cole was unable to get a permit to park his truck for selling shoes, but he could get one to film a full-length movie. So he changed the company name to Kenneth Cole Productions, got a permit and the next day began “shooting” conveniently across the street from the New York shoe show. While cameras were involved for a few minutes, the infant company sold 40 thousand pairs of shoes out of that truck in a little over two days.

Reaction is a relatively young brand extension of the Kenneth Cole name. Its designers are inspired by the best of pop culture, with strong roots in the music and technology scenes. The collection is characterized by hip, classic, comfortable styles that are versatile and easy to wear.

Today, the company name is still Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc., serving as a reminder, “to the importance of resourcefulness and innovative problem solving.”
